I have a five-year-old child in my care who is notorious for her mismatched or missing socks. She will wear one purple with one green and white striped–or just a sock on one foot and not the other. Or none at all.
This morning I held up one of her distinctive, lime green socks. "Anaka," I said. "Is this your sock?"
She studies it very carefully and hands it back to me. "No," she says, "I already have one like that at my house."
